If I could give my children one piece of advice it would be this: Do something new, exciting and fun every day, and do it with excellence – here’s why.
It’s been 10 years since I joined My Home Move as Commercial Director, but it was 7 years before that when I first met and was inspired by two of its founders (Ian Floyed & Steve Naylor). We began a 12-month process of securing investment to get the business going and then spent the next few years learning (expensively) how to get it right.
In the last 17 years, I’ve worn lots of hats across the business and I like to think I’ve played a role in much of what now makes up our DNA. I’ve worked with brilliant people (then and now) and I’ve nearly always had fun (the good days always outweigh the tricky ones)!
Despite the success My Home Move has already achieved, my conviction in the opportunity before us is stronger than ever before. We are working to be more innovative, more expert and more caring and this will shape the next phase of success. Two-thirds of my working life has been devoted to revolutionising the customer experience of conveyancing – because it matters. The bright ideas and technology we develop can make homemovers lives better. A caring, expert conveyancer provides vital reassurance and protection at what can sometimes be a time of great stress.
Being a revolutionary means being curious, open to change and bold enough to go for it. It is a mind-set and we can all train ourselves for it – learning to love being coached and challenged, constantly finding and sharing better ways to do things – but always with excellence. How can we all do it? I’d say the trick is to start small. Take a different route into work tomorrow or choose a different sandwich for lunch – fortune favours the brave after all!
So to celebrate my 10 year anniversary, I decided being brave was the only way to go. Here’s me, flinging myself down a Division 2 White-water course, having taken up kayaking for the first time just over a year ago! What will you do next?
