It seems rather fitting for us here that Apprenticeship Week should coincide with International Women’s Day. As a conveyancing provider, we straddle the worlds of law and property, which some might argue can still be seen as male-dominated industries.
We believe that encouraging women into these professions, and particularly into Residential Conveyancing, can be easily achieved with the right infrastructure, flexible working options which include the ability to work from a home based office to achieve work-life balance and tailored career progression programmes.
Our ‘modern’ apprenticeships are just one of the ways that we are helping women to progress their careers at My Home Move through either a technical or management career path. Established by our all-female project team (who all happen to be Licensed Conveyancers or Solicitors themselves), our apprenticeship schemes offer flexibility and support to women in our business that otherwise may have struggled with juggling full-time work, study and other commitments.
One of those women is Dominique, who shared with us how her Level 6 Licensed Conveyancer apprenticeship will help her progress her career:
“I began my career at My Home Move in 2012, first on a temporary contract, before being accepted for a permanent role as a Trainee Conveyancer. Having studied law at university, I had a broad knowledge of lots of different legal subjects, but I had no experience working in property law.
“When the Licensed Conveyancer apprenticeship was announced, I knew that I needed to jump on this opportunity. I’ve always challenged myself to keep learning and taking new opportunities, so it seemed like a natural next step in my career. I had already progressed through the ranks by taking on other development opportunities through our Academy, so I wanted to push myself to see how far I could go.
“Despite juggling my time between working full-time, studying and taking care of my two-year-old daughter, the apprenticeship experience has been amazing so far. Our trainer, Karen Phillips, makes every session thoroughly enjoyable. Because she makes everything so easy to understand and so simple, it really doesn’t feel like you’re learning about a complicated piece of law – which is a godsend for me because it’s been a while since I was in formal education. Karen will go out of her way to help you understand a topic and never makes you feel bad for not getting everything right the first time around. She helps us all to juggle work and study, even hosting weekend and evening sessions to make sure that we have the time that we need with her. My manager has also been really supportive through my studies and everyone in the business has been helpful while I’ve been learning more about all the different areas of conveyancing.
“Taking this apprenticeship means I’m going to be able to further my career here at My Home Move, as well as help me in my current role. Becoming a Licensed Conveyancer will open up so many more opportunities for me and will give me the confidence to progress my career – the sky’s the limit!”
