Arrogance: this has to be the trait I hate more than any other. It is used by people and businesses (usually men and those run by men – sorry but it’s true) to position themselves as the ‘best’, with nothing to substantiate their position.
For too long this industry has relied on the language of the Sales Room – ‘the biggest’, ‘the largest’, ‘the fastest growing’ – but to the everyday consumer, the man and woman on the street who entrusts us with the most important purchase, sale or transaction of their lives, these words are meaningless. Just think, when was the last time you bought a car just because it was from the biggest dealer – never. You bought the car because you loved the way it handled in the wet, or because it looked the part and was fast, or because it was one of only a handful ever made or because it can do 80 miles to the gallon. What I’m trying to say is that you bought the car because of something personal to you – and because you liked it.
So I’ve decided to start a revolution. I’m a 54 year old man, who on paper is the archetypal financial services director, but today I’m burning my metaphorical briefcase and braces, and embracing the language of ‘why’.
